Permacon’s landscaping products can be adapted to many styles. The most notable of these are Canadian and Craftsman, as well as traditional, country, mid-century, farmhouse, and modern. To help you create your outdoor design, here are some characteristics of each style in order to help you find the best concrete products.

Canadian and Craftsman Homes

Influenced by French architecture, Canadian houses gained popularity in the 18th century, especially in Quebec.

This style of residential architecture is distinguished by:

  • Very textured stone;
  • Colourful touches, especially in the window frames;
  • One full storey as well as 2 or 3 dormers on the second floor;
  • A stoop along the entire length of the façade;
  • A small, almost shoebox format;
  • Awnings.

Part of the larger family of Canadian homes, the Craftsman style is popular throughout Western Canada, including Vancouver.

  • Craftsman homes have one large dormer rather than 2 or 3 smaller ones.
  • More architectural detail than other Canadian houses (in the siding, cornices, and columns).

We couldn’t possibly drop a blog post about architecture without talking about farmhouses. This style’s popularity has seen a lot of growth over the past few years, with recent constructions having developed a sub-genre: the modern farmhouse. The farmhouse style typically appears in larger homes.

  • White siding;
  • Black window frames, doors, and roofs;
  • Pale stone and brick, often in shades of grey;

Mid-Century Homes

As the name suggests, mid-century homes date back to the 1950s. Popular in residential neighbourhoods, public buildings, and high-end townhouses, mid-century architecture has been around in Canada for 70 years (as long as Permacon!). The rise of modern mid-century design has brought this style back to the industry’s forefront.

This style of residential architecture is distinguished by:

  • High or horizontally elongated windows;
  • Half-storeys;
  • Low stoops, if not at ground level;
  • Angled roofs, sometimes inverted;
  • Yellow and black tones;
  • Long construction, often bungalows;
  • Elongated stones (plank size);
  • Large roof curbs;
  • The use of both stone and brick.

Traditional Homes

Traditional homes comprise several sub-genres of architecture that vary by region. Think of the old duplexes of Montreal, the townhouses of Toronto, the colonial houses throughout Ontario, and the Victorian buildings that can still be found in Canadian cities with a rich history.

With so many sub-genres, how can the traditional style be defined? Here are some distinguishing features:

  • The use of textured products on ceilings;
  • Arches and curves;
  • Stone in shades of red;
  • Patterns in the stone and around the windows;
  • A large stoop;
  • Imposing columns;
  • Strong use of white and black;
  • Corner windows.
